Amiga Interchange File Format

The IFF is used for the transfer of files between the Commodore Amiga home computers. This format is very flexible; it allows images and text to be stored in the file.

It is possible to export these files between an Amiga and a PC. The only change in the format will be that the name will change to LBM or CE. If IFF files are created on a PC then they are called ILBM.

The creation of the ILBM is achieved by compressing the images as planes. Employing this method is slower, however it does enable any application which can read IFF files to open them.

The Commodore Amiga was a popular home computer in the 1980's.

Jpeg compression provides an efficient way to reduce the file size of an image. One of the benefits of this is the reduced download time of the pictures.

Depending on compression settings when the picture is saved a greater or lesser amount of detail will be in the image. Image file size is therefore a compromise especially on the internet.
