Encapsulated Postscript File Format

The format Encapsulated Postscript (EPS) is used by many drawing and page layout programs and is most often the preferred format for these applications. It is the standard for importing and exporting postscript files. Within the EPS file there can be a mixture of text and graphics.

To be classed an EPS file it has to conform to the standard laid down by Adobe Document Structuring Conventions (DSC). The minimum for the file to conform is:

1. Header comment
2. Bounding box comment

Although there is no requirement for a file version to be included it is possible that an application may not load the file if this is omitted. An optional part of an EPS file is a preview option; this enables a bitmapped image representation to be displayed of the file without the application having to interpret the postscript code.

Jpeg compression provides an efficient way to reduce the file size of an image. One of the benefits of this is the reduced download time of the pictures.

Depending on compression settings when the picture is saved a greater or lesser amount of detail will be in the image. Image file size is therefore a compromise especially on the internet.
